Comparing Carlton Morris' Derby wages to what he made in his final season at Luton Town
Carlton Morris made the switch from Luton Town to Derby County following the Hatters’ relegation from the Championship.
The forward was a key figure for the club during his three years at Kenilworth Road, contributing 39 goals from 123 league appearances, including 11 from 38 in the Premier League.
However, back-to-back relegations in consecutive campaigns saw Luton go from the top flight to the third tier in short order.
Morris departed the Hatters last summer as a consequence, with Derby taking advantage by adding him to John Eustace’s side.
Here we use estimated figures from Capology to see how the 29-year-old’s salary at Pride Park compares to what he was earning during his time at Kenilworth Road…
Morris signed a three-year deal with Derby as part of his move from Luton, keeping him with the Championship side until the summer of 2028.
The forward has immediately cemented himself as a key part of Eustace’s side, starting in each of their opening nine league games of the season.
He’s already scored four times, including in draws against Bristol City and Ipswich Town, with the Rams struggling for consistent form.
Morris’ contract made him the top earner at Pride Park, with the striker receiving £25,000 per week from the Derbyshire outfit.
His form to start the season showed that this salary could be worthwhile, as he scored in each of his first four appearances for the club.
While Derby were unable to turn any of those games into victories, the blame for that can’t be laid at the feet of Morris, who is doing his part to help the team.
Other high earners at the club include Lewis Travis, Rhian Brewster and Matt Clarke, who were all signed within the last 12 months.
This is the impact that promotion back to the Championship has had at Pride Park, with their wage bill increasing as they solidify their position in the division.
This is also why it’s so important Eustace turn things around soon, as the threat of relegation could have a big impact for Derby.
Relegation from the Championship is what led to Morris’ departure, and he will not be keen to end up in League One next year anyway.
The forward did also receive a major pay rise with his move from the Hatters, as he was earning £10,000 per week prior to his move.
He was not one of the higher paid players in the squad as they suffered relegation to League One.
Instead, Jacob Brown, Tahith Chong and Marvelous Nakamba were all receiving the most, with the trio paid £30,000-a-week.
So, not only has Morris been able to avoid dropping down a division for a second year in a row, he’s also been able to increase his pay by 150 percent, becoming the top earner at a club in the process.
If he can continue to score at a decent rate for Derby, then that should go a long way to ensuring that Eustace’s side don’t suffer the same fate in 2026 as Luton did last season.
