Football League World exclusively revealed this week that the 33-year-old Red Dragons centre-forward is the subject of interest from as many as five EFL clubs.

Bristol Rovers, Crawley Town, Cambridge United, Salford City and Sheffield Wednesday are all understood to be keen on a move for the veteran hitman.

However, as much as the Owls may be interested in acquiring his services, the club remains unable to register any new players until football's governing bodies are satisfied that current owner Dejphon Chansiri has the funds to pay player wages on time moving forward.

Palmer has been a pivotal part of Wrexham's world-famous rise up the English footballing pyramid over the last few years.

Having joined the Racecourse revolution in January 2022 when the club were still plying their trade at National League level, the former Wimbledon forward bagged a superb 15 goals in 22 league outings for Wrexham during the second half of that 2021/22 campaign.

It wasn't enough to help fire the club into the football league that year, but his 17 goals the following campaign certainly were, as the Welsh side won the National League.

However, despite still making 39 appearances in League Two in 2023/24, Palmer was only able to bag seven goals, with that tally dropping down to three in 27 League One games last season.

As such, and naturally given he's now firmly in the twilight years of his career, his role in the squad purely from a playing-time perspective has began to diminish.

Therefore, he looks likely to leave the Racecourse before the summer transfer window slams shut on 1 September, but how much would his new club potentially have to pay him?

Well, according to Capology - whose figures must be stressed are an estimate - Palmer is currently taking home a wage packet of £6,000-per-week at Wrexham.

That isn't an eye-watering figure in today's footballing world, and it's one that perhaps Sheffield Wednesday wouldn't have to raise if they were to bring him to Hillsborough.

Indeed, if he was to join the Owls, that weekly wage packet would see become one of the lower-paid members of the current Wednesday squad - as per Capology.

The likes of Barry Bannan, Ike Ugbo, Dominic Iorfa and Nathaniel Chalobah are all said to be earning £20k-a-week or above, whilst at the other end of the spectrum, the likes of Bailey Cadamarteri is supposedly earning £5k-a-week.

Sheffield Wednesday could find value in Ollie Palmer if a deal can get done

With Owls boss Henrik Pedersen opting to deploy two strikers in attack, having sufficient strength in depth in the forward line is vital.

Now for the most part, Wednesday can't do much about that given their aforementioned issues signing and registering players, but if they were able to have those shackles taken off them before the window closes, then adding another body to the strike force wouldn't be a bad thing whatsoever.

Currently, Pedersen has a centre-forward crop consisting of Jamal Lowe, Ike Ugbo and Bailey Cadamarteri, with academy talents beyond that, and so adding a fourth proven and senior figure into that mix could be very wise indeed.

A Championship campaign is always long and testing, and that's just from the relentless nature of the fixture schedule, and so having depth - especially in a two-striker system - to be able to respond to fitness/injury/suspension issues by turning to players you can trust is crucial.

At 33, Palmer should still have some juice left in the tank to do a job for Wednesday, exemplified by his two-goal brace off the bench in added time vs Hull City in the League Cup on Tuesday night, which helped his side take the tie to penalties, which they ultimately won.

That was evidence that there is still goalscoring life in the veteran striker yet, and so he could be a very shrewd addition under the circumstances for Wednesday, if they can find a way to get a deal done.
