Newcastle United visit Turf Moor to take on Burnley on Tuesday night, hoping to end 2025 on a positive note following a recent run of disappointing results.
The Magpies have struggled on the road this season, but the trip to Lancashire gives them a golden opportunity to collect maximum points against the relegation battlers.
However, consistency has been a major problem for Eddie Howe’s Magpies this season.
Newcastle are heading to North West England on the back of just one win from their last five Premier League outings (D2, L2).
That uninspiring run of form includes a 1-0 defeat against Manchester United on Boxing Day, which extended their dry spell to three league games without a win.
Newcastle take on Burnley sitting 14th in the table after taking just 23 points from 18 games. They’re nearly as close to the relegation zone as they are to the Champions League places.
Ending 2025 on a positive note will set the tone for a better second half of the season, and Newcastle’s record against Burnley should give them plenty of reasons to be optimistic.
The Magpies have won their last seven consecutive Premier League meetings with Burnley. They’ve also come away from Turf Moor with maximum points in each of their last three visits.
Howe’s squad has been decimated by injuries, particularly across the backline, with six defenders ruled out of the game against Burnley.
Goalkeeper Nick Pope is also a doubt, so Aaron Ramsdale should continue in goal, behind a makeshift backline of Lewis Miley, Malick Thiaw, Fabian Schar, and Lewis Hall.
The midfield trio of Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes, and Jacob Ramsey should also remain unchanged, although Joelinto will be pushing to return to the XI.
Meanwhile, there could be a surprise tweak up front, with Yoane Wissa making his first Premier League start for Newcastle at the expense of Nick Woltemade.
Anthony Gordon and Jacob Murphy should reprise their roles on the flanks.
