The 58-year-old was given his marching orders as he headed for the tunnel at half-time for kicking a ball that hit a fan in the stands.

This was Wilder’s third game back in charge at Bramall Lane after he replaced Ruben Selles in September, returning for a third stint as manager.

The Blades were 1-0 up when the incident occurred, with Tyrese Campbell giving the hosts the lead going into the break.

However, a second half brace from Ross Stewart earned all three points for the Saints, handing Sheffield United their seventh loss in eight league games.

Wilder has confirmed that he intends to appeal any potential charge he receives for his dismissal at Bramall Lane last Tuesday evening.

He believes that the incident did not warrant a red card because it was accidental and that it was all sorted out with the fan who was hit, and he is hopeful of being on the touchline this weekend.

“Well, if the rules are the rules,” said Wilder, via The Star.

“If I approached the referee at half-time and had a right pop at him, if I picked the ball up out of my hands and booted it at him or at the fourth official or at their players or at their bench, or booted it into the stand, then I would expect the necessary punishment that goes along with that and I won't appeal.

“But I will appeal because, as you've seen on it, I've nonchalantly knocked it back and it’s got a flier.

“I've gone straight into the stand, apologised to the guy, everything's all sorted and I've just turned round and I've got a red card put in my face.

“So, yeah, I will appeal.

“I believe the charge, if there is a charge that comes, and I'm not expecting one, but if there is one, I will appeal it and I'll be okay for the Hull City game and back where I want to be, because I didn't enjoy not being able to help the team.”

Sheffield United have struggled for form this season, with five defeats from their opening five games leading to the decision to dismiss Selles as manager.

Wilder made his return just months after departing from his second stint in charge, and he has so far overseen one win from three fixtures.

Victory over Oxford United last weekend finally got the Blades on the board, but they remain rooted to the bottom of the Championship table at the moment.

Next up for Sheffield United is a trip to face Hull City on 4 October in a 12.30pm kick-off in what is the final league game before the upcoming international break.

Chris Wilder should have no complaints if charged for red card

It remains to be seen whether Wilder will be handed any kind of touchline ban for his red card against Southampton.

However, if he is given a ban, then he can hardly have any complaints as he’s struck a fan in the stands with a ball.

He is a 58-year-old man, and should know better than to take the risk of hitting a ball in that direction, even if he did so tamely.

No harm was seemingly done, but that is besides the point and he simply has to have a better control of his emotions, especially when his side is already leading the game at that moment.
