Sheffield Wednesday winger Djeidi Gassama has become the latest player to leave the troubled Championship club after completing a move to Scottish Premiership side Rangers.

It has been a nightmare summer for Wednesday, who are currently under three separate transfer embargoes and have been hit with a three-window transfer fee ban after failing to pay players and staff on time in both May and June.

In a desperate attempt to raise funds, the Owls have been forced to sell some of their star players this summer, and after Anthony Musaba joined Turkish side Samsunspor over the weekend, fellow winger Gassama has now followed him out of the exit door.

Gassama, who scored eight goals and provided one assist in 47 games to help Wednesday to a 12th-placed finish last season, was linked with Blackburn Rovers earlier this month, with the Lancashire outfit said to have made an enquiry about the 21-year-old.

However, Gassama has now made the move north of the border with Rangers in a deal believed to be worth around £2.2 million, and after putting pen to paper on a four-year contract at Ibrox, he has become new manager Russell Martin's seventh new signing of the summer.

As Wednesday and Rangers were both training at St George's Park last week, it looked as though Gassama's move to the Scottish giants would be a mere formality after he linked up with his new team-mates, but the deal appeared to have stalled towards the back end of last week amid the wait for Owls owner Dejphon Chansiri to provide his final signature.

However, any issues were quickly resolved, and Gassama has now officially become a Gers player, with Wednesday confirming his exit in a brief 55-word statement on Tuesday afternoon.

"Djeidi Gassama has departed Hillsborough, joining SPL giants Rangers for an undisclosed fee," Wednesday said on their official website.

"The wideman signed for the Owls from current European champions Paris St-Germain in August 2023.

"Gassama went on to make 82 appearances, scoring 12 goals along the way.

"Wednesday thank Djeidi for his services and wish him every success for the future."

After finalising his switch to Ibrox, Gassama said that he was "very excited" to join a club that he believes can help him reach the "next level" in his career, while Martin said that he is a player "who will get supporters on the edge of their seats" and predicted that he will "add an extra dimension to our attack with his qualities".

The transfer fee received for Gassama seems to have helped to ease some of Wednesday's financial problems, with many players and staff now believed to have been paid the wages they were owed in full, but supporters will be frustrated that the club have had to sell one of their key players in order to meet their obligations.

Gassama is a player with huge potential who has improved significantly over the past two seasons at Hillsborough, so the Owls will be disappointed to receive such a minimal fee for the Frenchman, who could arguably have brought in an eight-figure sum at some point over the next few years.

With Wednesday banned from paying transfer fees for the next three windows, it will be incredibly tough for them to find a replacement for Gassama of similar quality, and fears that the club will be involved in a relegation battle next season will increase further after the loss of their main attacking threat.
