Team news

Lionel Messi will be assessed ahead of the round of 16 clash against Egypt. The World Cup all-time top goalscorer suffered a head injury following a collision mid-game but is expected to be fine. Facundo Medina was subbed off with an injury concern, which appears to be just cramp.

Mohanad Lasheen will be available for selection after missing the round of 32 clash through suspension. Mohamed Hany looks unlikely to feature after suffering a head injury, with Karim Hafez also a doubt after suffering from fatigue. Ahmed Fatouh’s hamstring injury could also see him miss out, after not featuring against Australia.

Predicted line-ups

Argentina XI (4-4-2): Martinez; Molina, Romero, Martinez, Medina; De Paul, Fernandez, Mac Allister, Almada; Messi, Martinez.

Egypt XI (4-2-3-1): Shobeir; T Alaa, Fathy, Ibrahim, Hafez; Lasheen, Ateya; Ziko, Salah, Ashour; Marmoush.

Recent form

Argentina won all three of their World Cup group stage matches, as Lionel Messi starred for the world champions, scoring all five goals in their opening two matches, a 3-0 win over Algeria and a 2-0 victory over Austria. Lionel Scaloni’s side then brushed aside debutants Jordan 3-1 to top Group J, before just about overcoming Cape Verde 3-2 in extra time.

Egypt secured the runners-up spot in Group G unbeaten, drawing with Belgium 1-1 in their opening match of the World Cup, before defeating New Zealand 3-1 for their first ever win in the competition. They ended their group stage campaign with a 1-1 draw against Iran, before defeating Australia on penalties in the round of 32 to reach the final 16.

What’s been said?

Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni believes this World Cup has no clear favourites: “I think this World Cup is very tricky for everyone, it seems there is no clear favourite. There are no national teams that, as we used to see before the World Cup, were clear favourites.”

Egypt coach Hossam Hassan on Egypt imposing their own game on Argentina: “We have our own character and we must impose our personality. We must have a way we play. But the Argentina national team, in the end, they are the title holders. They have all the respect.”
