Man City have the chance to close the gap on Arsenal
Chelsea and Manchester City do battle this afternoon for potentially the penultimate time this season.
Both teams returned from the international break with victories in the FA Cup quarter-finals. Chelsea thumped League One side Port Vale 7-0, while Man City brushed Liverpool aside with ease.
Kept apart in the semi-final draw, it means they can meet in next month’s FA Cup final at Wembley, provided they overcome Leeds and Southampton respectively.
Today, though, is about important Premier League points as Liam Rosenior and Pep Guardiola are in need of a win for differing reasons.
Chelsea are very much involved in the battle for Champions League qualification and hopes of returning to Europe’s premier competition have been boosted thanks in part to London rivals Arsenal.
However, Chelsea have suffered back-to-back losses in the league without scoring and are facing a daunting task against a Man City side they’ve failed to beat since the Champions League final in May 2021.
City do not require any extra incentive to go for the win at Stamford Bridge as Arsenal’s home defeat to Bournemouth yesterday means the gap at the top of the Premier League table can be cut to six points.
