Arsenal and Liverpool stars hoping to fire Sweden to victory in World Cup opener

After taking an unusual route to qualify, Sweden begin their 2026 World Cup campaign against Tunisia on Monday.

As one of the four best-ranked Nations League group winners that finished outside the top two of their World Cup qualifying group, Sweden advanced to the play-offs to keep their dream alive.

From there, Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres stepped up in a big way. Scoring a hat-trick in the semi-final win over Ukraine before netting the winning goal against Poland to book his nation’s place at this summer’s showpiece.

Tunisia, meanwhile, had no such issues in qualifying. They topped their group by winning nine of ten matches, scoring 22 goals and conceding none.

However, their form has dipped alarmingly since, winning two of their last nine international matches which includes a round of 16 exit at the Africa Cup of Nations earlier in the year.

This will be the first meeting between the two nations since February 2003. While Tunisia won that game 1-0, they still trail Sweden in the head-to-head record but can move level in the World Cup opener.
