Huddersfield Town have dismissed Lee Grant from his post as head coach at the ACCU Stadium following a 3-1 defeat away to Burton Albion, leaving the Terriers in sixth place in the League One table and 10 points off the automatic positions.

There was much optimism surrounding Town at the beginning of this campaign, with former Manchester United and Stoke City goalkeeper Lee Grant taking the helm in West Yorkshire for his first role as a head coach in senior football.

Grant had previously been a key part of Kieran McKenna's staff at Ipswich Town, which saw the Tractor Boys rise from League One to the Premier League with back-to-back promotions, with Huddersfield supporters hoping his arrival would yield a similar result.

However, things haven't gone exactly to plan, despite the heavy focus on summer recruitment, and now the club find themselves once again in search of a new boss to guide them back to the second tier.

With no concrete names having emerged as yet, there is still much speculation as to who the next person in the dugout will be, and what sort of manager/head coach the Terriers will target remains to be seen.

Football League World's Huddersfield fan pundit, Graeme Rayner, has shared their thoughts on the dismissal of Grant and who they think could be a good bet to take the reins at the club.

Graeme told FLW: "The first thing I'd say is, I think it's the right decision to remove Lee Grant and I actually give the chairman (Kevin Nagle) some praise for making the decision, because a lot of Town fans felt that perhaps the decision would come after the window and maybe the season would fizzle out, but clearly from the timing of the decision and what the owner has said is, you know, that's not going to happen."He's determined to get the season back on track while we still can, so fair play. I think that the challenge is that there isn't a clear and obvious choice, and that's for a few reasons."There aren't any obviously suitably linked names that have been rumoured, but also because in recent years we've just about tried every approach."We've tried new managers who've never managed anywhere before, with varying success. We've had great success with Carlos Corberan and nearly got to the Premier League."Then we've had poor, poor success this time around. We've tried the likes of Darren Moore and Michael Duff. We've tried foreign with Breitenreiter. There isn't an obvious way that the club seems to want to go".

Tony Mowbray, Gary Rowett, and Jim Goodwin namedropped as potential suitors for the vacant Huddersfield Town post

Even with FLW exclusively revealing that Lincoln City boss Michael Skubala is on the Huddersfield manager's radar, the ex-Leeds United coach may not want to depart his high-flying Imps, and Rayner has pointed out that the club never seem to go for in-work managers.A trio of names have been tipped up as potential contenders though, and they include a former Town player in the form of Jim Goodwin, who signed for the club in 2008 from Scunthorpe United."We very rarely seem to appoint anyone who's in a job. We most often seem to go for out-of-work managers," Graeme added."The sort of, the ilk of the manager that we would like, I think, or I would like, would be somebody pragmatic, experienced, good at managing players and personalities, like a Tony Mowbray or a Gary Rowett kind of type. I don't think we should go for a new, untried, untested manager. And really, it doesn't matter.

"The style of football would be great if it were attractive, attacking, flowing, dynamic and aggressive and all of that. But actually, the most important thing at the moment is results, a clear style of play, and a clear intent and results. That's all that matters."If that style of play isn't that attractive, if it gets us over the line and gets us into the Championship, fine, then look at it then. But I think we, as Town fans, what we most want to do is get out of League One, because it's a horrible league to watch."If we can get someone in who's done that before, brilliant."Someone like a Tony Mowbray or Gary Rowett. Someone left field would be someone like Jim Goodwin, a former player at the club. He's doing well at Dundee United in the Premier League in Scotland, so he's probably not available, but you know he's a former player who's had success north of the border as a manager, so maybe someone like him.

"But yeah, it's clear there isn't an obvious name being linked. I just hope it's not anyone underwhelming."

Rayner's trio of choices are not all out of work, but there's plenty of experience among them.

Mowbray has been without work since his dismissal from West Brom in the latter stages of last season, having previously spent time recovering from bowel cancer.

The 62-year-old is a true veteran of the game, having managed over 880 games across his career, though whether he would be willing to return to management with Huddersfield remains to be seen.

Rowett was sacked this season by Oxford United, with the club languishing towards the bottom of the Championship table, and would certainly be a more pragmatic option in comparison to Grant, renowned for getting the best out of the squad afforded to him and not wedded to one style of play.

Goodwin, who is currently in work with Dundee United of the Scottish Premiership, made 47 appearances as a player for Huddersfield between 2008 and 2010, and could potentially be tempted away from Tannadice Park if his old club come calling.

Whoever the Terriers appoint will have a tough task on their hands, though with one of the most talented squads in the division, the correct appointment could well propel them to promotion.
