Sint Truiden have received a huge blow to their season with the news that experienced Japanese defender Shogo Taniguchi is set to be out for the rest of the season. The central defender had to come off injured during the sides 2-1 win over KV Mechelen and it has been revealed by Het Niuewsblad that Taniguchi tore an Achilles tendon.
Taniguchi’s involvement in the side had come as their form began to improve and he was a clear leader at the back. The 33-year-old has played 13 matches for the side since joining in the summer, scoring once. He became just the latest in a long line of Japanese internationals to represent the Canaries. Despite his vast experience, Sint Truiden are the defenders first European team. After 374 appearances for Kawasaki, he left the club in 2022 to join Al-Rayyan in the Qatari league. He played 43 times for the side before joining Sint Truiden on a free.
