South Africa coach Hugo Broos criticised the Africa Cup of Nations organisation in Morocco after a 1-0 defeat to Egypt, citing chaotic stadium access and a muted atmosphere.
According to L'Équipe, he said his family faced disorder before kick-off. He said police blocked some ticket-holders while crowds without tickets were allowed through, adding that his wife felt afraid and describing the organisation as catastrophic.
Broos also pointed to sparse attendances since the start of the competition, suggesting that when entry is not free, few people turn up. He said there were hardly any spectators for South Africa’s matches against Egypt and Angola.
He contrasted this tournament with Gabon in 2017, which he won with Cameroon, and Côte d’Ivoire in 2024. Those editions, he said, felt like real tournaments, with flags waved and greetings as teams travelled to training, whereas he senses none of that in Morocco.
South Africa have three points and sit second in Group B behind Egypt. They are well placed to reach the last 16 and can secure progress against Zimbabwe on Monday at 17:00.
