Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has taken a swipe at Lesotho after securing a 3-0 victory over the Southern African nation on Friday.
The South African national is in pole position to book a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup as Mohau Nkota, Lyle Foster, and Oswin Appollis got on the scoresheet.
Broos’ men are at the summit of the table, having accumulated 16 points after seven games. Meanwhile, their next opponent, Nigeria, who are in fourth place play second-placed Rwanda on Saturday.
With his team in a favorable position, the 72-year-old Belgian mentor is pleased with the victory after Lesotho’s case over the ineligible fielding of Teboho Mokoena when the two teams met in March.
“After everything [Lesotho case against Teboho Mokoena] that happened in the past days it was nervous game, it was not an easy game. I saw a very motivated Lesotho, but we did it very well and we had some chances, we dominated,” said Broos.
“The only thing we had to do today was to keep organized and to not make stupid mistakes and that’s something we didn’t do. Lesotho was kicking the ball for 90 minutes and hoped for a mistake, but we didn’t do it, and we won the game – I think we deserved to win the game.
“That shows again that we only win the games on the pitch and not off the pitch. What happened in the past days was not normal; therefore, it was so important for us to win the game today [Friday] and that’s what we did.
He continued: “We will see next week, if God is with us, we will qualify already next Tuesday for the World Cup and that is our goal. We are in a good situation, we have everything in our own hands, so that is up to us to finish it.
