France international Hugo Ekitike underwent Achilles surgery in London five days ago after rupturing his right Achilles tendon during Liverpool’s Champions League tie with PSG.

According to L'Équipe, the 23-year-old suffered the injury on 14 April in the quarter-final second leg at Anfield, with both legs finishing 0-2.

His tears on the Anfield pitch became one of spring 2026’s defining images. He received strong backing from team-mates. The setback rules him out of the World Cup, scheduled 11 June to 19 July in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

The former PSG forward began rehabilitation quickly. He was operated on by a medical team with long-standing links to Liverpool players. The procedure was remotely overseen by Jayson Tatum’s surgeon, with the basketball player having suffered the same injury in May 2025.

For this type of rupture, a return to competition typically takes eight, nine or 10 months.
