Hugo Souza makes first start for Brazil in friendly against Japan

On the morning of Tuesday, the 14th, the Brazilian National Team took the field to face Japan in an international friendly during this October FIFA date. Corinthians goalkeeper Hugo Souza started for the team for the first time in his career, but was unable to prevent a 3-2 defeat after a comeback.

Brazil started out winning 2-0 with goals in the first half, but in 19 minutes of the second half conceded three goals to the Japanese team, including an own goal by Fabrício Bruno. It was the first time a Corinthians goalkeeper started a game for the National Team since 2002, when Dida played against Saudi Arabia.

On the other hand, more recently, Corinthians had a goalkeeper wearing the Brazilian National Team jersey in 2018, with Cássio, also against Japan in a friendly. On that occasion, the former Corinthians goalkeeper came on during the match, starting as a substitute.

Before Hugo Souza, Yuri Alberto was the last Timão player to represent Brazil. In the friendly against Morocco at the beginning of 2023, the striker came on in the second half after having a great season with Corinthians.

Due to the trip, Hugo Souza will not play for Corinthians next Wednesday, the 15th, against Santos. Because of this, he received a yellow card against Mirassol and will have to serve a suspension. The match will take place at Vila Belmiro, starting at 9:30 PM (Brasília time).
