Hugo Souza: ‘Spiritual’ bond with Corinthians, snubs rivals

Corinthians goalkeeper Hugo Souza is very close to fulfilling a dream: representing the Brazilian National Team in a match. According to coach Carlo Ancelotti, the athlete's debut for the Seleção is expected to take place in the second friendly played by Brazil during this FIFA window, on the 14th against Japan.

This feeling of gratitude from the goalkeeper became even more evident in a recent interview with Placar, where Hugo Souza declared his love for Corinthians and made a promise: never to play for Palmeiras. His statement referenced the transfer of former Corinthians goalkeeper Carlos Miguel to their rival, after spending a few months playing in English football, where he went after executing a controversial contract termination with Alvinegro.

“No, I will never play (for Palmeiras). I can commit to that. People say you never know what tomorrow brings, but when you fall in love with a jersey, you also develop a great deal of respect. I was at the lowest point of my career when Corinthians found me, and that’s when I got to live the best period of all. I see this as a form of gratitude. I don’t know if I’ll stay here for another ten years, if I’ll leave later on, or where my career will take me, but for me it’s about loyalty.”

Hugo Souza went on to elaborate on his reasoning. “I’ll go a little further: it’s spiritual. It’s as if Corinthians were my wife, and I am loyal to her. The Bible teaches that a husband must love his wife as Jesus loved the church. And how was that? By giving his own life for her. I’m using this analogy to say that this is the loyalty I carry for my life: absolute, sealed, and unbreakable commitment.”, he concluded.
