Hull City took themselves further away from the threat of relegation on Saturday with an extremely impressive 1-0 win away at fourth-place Sunderland.

Joe Gelhardt's in-swinging corner found its way into the back of the net in the 18th minute as Black Cats goalkeeper Anthony Patterson allowed the ball to slip through his gloves, handing the Tigers a crucial three points in their fight for survival.

Ruben Selles' side became the first to beat Sunderland at the Stadium of Light this season, and meant that the gap to those in the drop zone increased to three points ahead of a huge six-pointer against Cardiff City on Tuesday in South Wales.

However, there was once again no place in the starting XI for Mason Burstow. The forward has started just seven times all season, and those at the top at Hull may have a slight feeling of regret after sanctioning the £2m purchase of him from Chelsea in the summer.

Verdict made on Burstow's start to life at Hull

Burstow signed a four-year deal with the Tigers on his arrival at the MKM Stadium in August, but he has not been able to capture any sort of form throughout his time at the club so far, and the arrival of Selles following Tim Walter's sacking has not helped his situation.

Nevertheless, at just 21, there is still plenty of time for the forward to grow and develop as a player, but this may have to happen elsewhere.

Football League World has asked their Hull Fan Pundit, Ryan Frankish, if he believes the club are regretting the decision to sign Burstow and what his future holds.

He told FLW: "I'd say with Mason Burstow, I think there may be an element of regret somewhere, but he's only young.

"So, I think it's a case of he is probably going to need to get loaned out to up his stock value if we are looking to get rid of him, and he's surplus to requirements in our squad."

Ryan continued: "But I think there's definitely room for growth, and we don't need to regret signing him when he’s only been here for six months.

"I can't really see him playing under Ruben Selles to be honest, but he has spoken highly of him. I just think a loan move would be the best for everyone."

Burstow's Sunderland struggles have continued with Hull

After a difficult year on loan with Sunderland in 2023/24, signing Burstow did look to be a huge risk for Hull. The reported £2m also looked to be relatively high considering his record of just one goal and one assist in the Championship last season and these struggles have followed him.

The Tigers have had a tough campaign themselves, and this will not have helped the 21-year-old's confidence. Therefore, a loan to League One in the summer could be the perfect tonic to help the forward turn his career around, as currently he is not pulling up any trees.

Burstow showed bright signs in Chelsea's academy, but he has not been able to replicate that at senior level yet and moving to a division where he will get consistent game time and opportunity is crucial to his development.
