Atletico Madrid won Saturday’s Madrid derby in emphatic fashion, securing a 5-2 success against Real Madrid at the RiyadhAir Metropolitano. Goals from Robin Le Normand, Alexander Sorloth, Julian Alvarez (x2) and Antoine Griezmann ensured a memorable afternoon for Los Colchoneros.

And post-match (via Diario AS), Atleti head coach Diego Simeone gave his reaction to the events that transpired in the Spanish capital.

“Real Madrid are one of the best teams in the world, so today we had to play a great game. From the beginning we knew where we could do damage, with breaks on the outside with Nico, Barrios, Julián, Giuliano… Taking the centre-backs out and leaving Sorloth inside to generate chances. I think that, beyond their two goals, the team did well.

“I liked everything. From the time he started until we finished, the team always knew what he had to do. The team did not change in the search for the match that was seen and we wanted to look for. And when the team is committed in this way and, above all, translates it into the game, from the coach’s side he gives us answers.”

Simeone admitted that he had been rather emotional in the aftermath of his best result against Real Madrid.

“I cried because there were many emotions inside the body. The season started complicated and there is a lot of effort from many people who are not seen, so this felt wonderful.”

Simeone continues praise of Atleti superstar Julian Alvarez

Simeone heaped praise on Alvarez after his midweek hat-trick against Rayo Vallecano, and he spoke again on the Argentina international after his two-goal performance against Real Madrid.

“Julián is committed to the team, to the club and he is very good. He has some conditions and he works a lot – not only does he give you in the offensive game, he gives you work and commitment to the team to have a good dynamic. We need him, we have to take care of him and hopefully he can be at the club for many years. We have to give him tools to score goals. The team helps him and he is very good.”
