Romeo Lavia has played against some top players despite being right at the beginning of his career and he’s named his toughest opponent.
Lavia joined Chelsea in a deal worth up to £58m in the summer of 2023 from Southampton, but his time at Stamford Bridge has been plagued by injury.
The midfielder played just 30 minutes of football last season, and whilst he’s played more this campaign, he’s one again struggled with injury issues.
The Belgian has made ten Premier League appearances this season, and he’s shown how important a player he is for the Blues.
Lavia has played alongside both Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez and brings a real balance and defensive stability to the team, which has been missed.
Former Premier League striker Dean Ashton claimed the Blues miss the 21-year-old more than Wesley Fofana, and he’s got a point, with Maresca hopeful the Belgium international can return for the final ten games of the season.
Lavia has had a tough time with injuries at Chelsea.
Lavia came through the academy at Manchester City with the likes of Cole Palmer and despite his age has played against some top players.
In a recent interview he named his toughest opponent, who is actually someone that failed to succeed during his time at Chelsea.
“Hardest I would probably say Kevin De Bruyne because I’ve been with him for a full year at City, in training, watching his moves etc,” he told Rising Ballers.
And then I moved to Southampton, played against City and I’m thinking, ‘OK, I know him’. I didn’t know him! So that was probably the toughest opponent I’ve played against.”
