Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has conceded he is unsure how long it will take his side to reach the standards set by Premier League champions Liverpool, ahead of Sunday’s landmark 100th meeting between the two rivals at Anfield.

United endured their worst Premier League campaign last season, finishing 15th, while Liverpool equalled their record of 20 league titles, underlining the widening gulf between the clubs. Despite the history and intensity of English football’s most storied rivalry, Amorim acknowledged that United’s rebuilding process remains a long-term project, speaking to Sky Sports.

I don’t know how long it will take,” Amorim admitted. “Sometimes things change really fast. We can win any game, that’s how we have to think. The most important thing is the next match, and we will fight to reach Liverpool’s level in the future.”

The Portuguese coach, who arrived at Old Trafford last November, has faced growing scrutiny amid United’s inconsistent form. Yet his message ahead of the trip to Anfield was one of patience and persistence, emphasising small steps rather than sweeping promises.
