Jeremy Doku has opened up on his improved performances in a Manchester City shirt ahead of the club’s last-16 tie at the FIFA Club World Cup.
The Belgium international has been one of the standout performers for Pep Guardiola’s side in the competition so far, and played a crucial role in ensuring the club’s qualification for the last-16 phase in the tournament.
In the matchday three victory over Juventus, it was Jeremy Doku who claimed the Superior Player of the Match award for his starring role in attack as Manchester City waltzed to a 2-5 win over the Italian giants.
Inspired by Doku’s goal and overall performance against Igor Tudor’s side, City would progress into the knockout stage as Group G winners, taking on Group H runners-up Al Hilal in the next round of the tournament.
Speaking to reporters during a recent interview, Doku has credited his commitment to faith as the reason behind his new-found levels of performance that have played a significant role in City reaching the last-16 of the Club World Cup.
“I don’t know (if we are back to our best),” Doku admitted. “We just look game by game and this was a good game and we looked a bit more like how we were before, and we will try to produce in every game like this and in every performance.”
The Belgium international continued, “I feel free and enjoying my football, of course.
“I can still improve on certain aspects but when I play free and with the right mind, with the trust of the coach obviously, then you see a better version of me and now you are seeing a glimpse of it.”
Opening up on a major role in his improve performances, Jeremy Doku revealed, “I think it’s more to do with my faith, I’m more occupied with my faith and I just give all the glory to my Lord and our saviour Jesus Christ.”
Manchester City return to the scene of their matchday three group stage win on Monday night as they take on Simone Inzaghi’s Al Hilal at Orlando’s Camping World Stadium, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.
There has already been concerns over a disrupted evening in store for City against the Saudi Pro League giants however, with weather reports indicating a threat of thunderstorms which could lead to match delays.
Chelsea became the latest side to endure lengthy postponements as their eventual 1-4 win over Benfica in the last-16 was held by a delay of almost two hours in Charlotte, taking the overall evening up to a length of around four hours.
