Harry Maguire has confirmed that he is in active talks with Manchester United over a new contract.

As things stand, the defender would be leaving Old Trafford and pulling the curtains on his seven-year Red Devils tenure at the end of June.

Yet, both he and club chiefs are keen for the relationship to continue beyond the summer.

In fairness, bidding farewell to two of the side’s most experienced and integral starters, Casemiro and Maguire, in one transfer window could prove far too detrimental ahead of a campaign in which United will be looking to compete on all fronts.

While the Brazilian veteran is now seeing out his final seven games in red, Maguire can take some solace in knowing his journey isn’t coming to an end just yet.

What did Maguire have to say about his situation at United?

Reports suggest that the 33-year-old’s new deal will be a one-year contract plus the option of a further 12 months, meaning he could be tied to the club until 2028 at the latest.

He weighed in on the matter while on international duty with England this week after being recalled to the setup for the first time under Thomas Tuchel.

“I think we’ll reach an agreement on what is best for the club and myself. What that agreement is, I’m sure you’ll find out over the next few weeks. But yes, I think it’ll get sorted sooner rather than later, whether I stay or leave,” said Maguire.

“I love this club. But it’s got to be right for myself, and it’s got to be right for the club as well.

“I don’t want to be staying just because of sentimental reasons. I want to be staying because I want to be there, and the club want me to drive the club forward, and they feel like I’ve got a big part to play in it.

“And if that’s the case, then I’m sure we’ll sit down and agree on something.”

How Maguire is faring as of late

Heading into the closing stages of 2025/2026, Maguire is enjoying a prominent role under Michael Carrick, having started every single game since the interim manager took the reins.

It does, however, beg the question as to how much he will feature when Matthijs de Ligt returns from his lengthy injury layoff; at no point this campaign have Maguire, De Ligt and Lisandro Martinez all been fit at the same time.

Presumably, Carrick, who’s proven he’s not a man of frequent change in his line-ups, will stick with the Three Lions star even if his counterparts become available in the coming weeks.
