FC Barcelona got to a winning start in the Spanish Super Cup campaign as they beat Athletic Club last night with a 2-0 scoreline.

One of the scorers for the Catalans in this game was the star midfielder Gavi, who finally returned to a competition where he has already proven his mettle after missing its last edition due to his ACL injury.

This was inarguably his best performance since his return from injury, and as Mundo Deportivo has reported, he also talked to the media after the end of this game.

One of the subjects he addressed in this media talk was the way he celebrated his goal, and revealed the reasoning for his choice of celebration:

“I’ve done several celebrations, but one of them was indeed for Dani Olmo. He knows how important he is to us, and he’ll be there in the final.”

“I told him beforehand that I would dedicate it to him if I scored, and that’s what I did. Both Dani and Pau are players who help us a lot, and we’re all happy that they can finally play.”

Overall, the Barcelona midfielder was quite pleased with the win and his own performance:

“I’m happy and very pleased with the team’s victory; that’s what matters in the end… I was lucky to score the goal and provide the assist, but what really matters is that we’re in the final, and we have to win it… I want to keep improving each time”

Gavi also reassured Barcelona fans about his fitness after he was substituted sometime before the end of the game: “A minor issue… I was feeling a bit stiff, but it’s nothing serious for Sunday.”

After helping his team qualify for the final, Barcelona fans will be hoping to see him repeat his performance from the 2023 Spanish Super Cup final when he scored a goal and provided two assists against Real Madrid. Hopefully, he will be at his best physical shape for this purpose on Sunday.
