Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has dropped a major selection hint after the FA Cup exit.
Man United lost on penalties to Fulham, crashing out of the competition they won last year.
Speaking after the game, Amorim was quizzed on whether he is considering a change in the striker position moving forward.
He said (via ManUtd.com): “Anything can happen in the next games. During training, we don’t have a lot of time to train, but we need to see the opposition, feel the moment of the player physically in this moment with a lot of games.
“Because we are going to start playing Thursday/Sunday, anything can happen.
“But I will focus on just the next game, you know, try and in that way, like I’m going to change the striker.
“No, I will choose the best players to win the next match.”
After the exits of Marcus Rashford and Antony, Amorim finds himself grappling with a shortage of firepower up front.
Amad Diallo’s injury setback in February has only deepened the crisis, with the winger potentially sidelined for the rest of the season.
Rasmus Hojlund, Joshua Zirkzee and Alejandro Garnacho are the only forwards at Amorim’s disposal.
Hojlund, without any real competition for his spot, has struggled for sharpness, and it showed in his lacklustre display against Fulham.
Tasked with leading the line, the Dane posed little threat, looking off the pace and lacking confidence.
Christian Eriksen carved out a decent opening for him in the first half, but Hojlund failed to make the most of it.
In 68 minutes on the pitch, he mustered just one shot—an alarming statistic when compared to his teenage replacement.
Obi fired three shots and injected urgency into United’s attack.
The 17-year-old nearly stole the show with a dramatic late winner, only to be denied by a brilliant save from Bernd Leno.
The Red Devils face Real Sociedad in mid-week and Obi could make his first start for United.
It may still be early for Obi to earn that honour but lack of options could force the head coach to take the risk.
