Former Leeds winger Ian Poveda has been banned from driving for six months after admitting speeding at 100mph in a 70mph zone.

According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, the 26-year-old was stopped by a police officer on the A184 in South Tyneside, driving a black Range Rover around quarter to nine on Sunday 23 February 2025, while he was a Sunderland player.

At North Tyneside Magistrates’ Court, the prosecution said an officer saw the vehicle accelerate on the A184 dual carriageway and suggested it was travelling at about 100mph in a 70mph limit. The officer signalled for it to stop and Poveda pulled over immediately. The defence said the speeding lasted only a very short period.

The court heard he already had nine points from three previous speeding offences. Magistrates imposed a further six points, triggering a six-month ban under the totting up procedure.

Poveda, who did not attend the hearing, was fined £800, with a £320 surcharge and £600 costs after admitting the offence.

The London-born Colombia international previously played for Leeds in the Premier League and made 25 appearances across four seasons. He left Sunderland last month and has signed for Internacional de Bogota.
