Igor Tudor is under mounting pressure at Tottenham a month after his mid-February appointment, with one draw and four defeats in the league and the club 17th, one point above West Ham with seven matches left.
Spurs have also gone out of the Champions League in the last 16 to Atlético de Madrid, 2-5 then 3-2, a setback attributed to the unsuccessful decision to start goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky in the first leg. According to L'Équipe, Tottenham have opened talks with Adi Hütter about a possible succession, while Italian media have also linked Roberto De Zerbi.
Sunday’s 0-3 defeat by Nottingham Forest, a direct rival in the survival scrap, has further weakened the Croatian’s position.
When Tudor was unveiled on 14 February, sporting director Johan Lange spoke of clarity, determination and experience. Results since have made those words look premature.
Away from football, Tudor is mourning the death of his father, which occurred on Sunday. Assistant Bruno Saltor said he is trying to support him as best he can.
Tottenham have not played in the second tier since 1977-78, 48 years ago, and returned at the first attempt.
With Wolverhampton on 17 points and Burnley on 20 appearing set for the drop, the final relegation place remains between West Ham on 29, Tottenham on 30, Nottingham Forest on 32 and Leeds on 33. Spurs still face top six trips to Aston Villa in matchweek 35 and Chelsea in matchweek 37.
