Speaking to media gathered in the mixed zone following Olympique de Marseille’s draw (1-1) against Lille this weekend, striker Mason Greenwood (23) reacted to not being featured as a nominee in the UNFP player of the season awards. Four PSG players, one Lyon player, and none from Marseille were featured in the publication of the list of nominees for the UNFP Player of the Season awards. There has been a stir in Marseille over the omission of their side’s top scorer, who is also the second top-scorer in Ligue 1 behind Ousmane Dembélé with 18 goals. “I’m not really bothered about that,” said Greenwood to RMC Sport, Maritimas Medias & La Provence. “The only thing that bothers me at the moment is getting Marseille to the Champions League,” said the former Getafe and Manchester United player.Despite being one of Ligue 1’s most prolific scorers in the first half of the season, he came under fire in March from Roberto De Zerbi at a press conference attended by Get French Football News. “I expect more from him. He has to do more, because what he is currently showing is not enough. If he wants to achieve his ambition of becoming a champion, he has to be more consistent, sacrifice more and be more determined.”The former Manchester United player had made efforts during the international break, reportedly returning early from rest days offered by Roberto De Zerbi in a bid to prove his dedication and rebuild his physical capabilities ahead of the final run-in of the season. The Englishman has recently scored against Toulouse and Montpellier to bring his total to 18 goals for the season. The Englishman joined Marseille this summer from Manchester United in a deal worth around €31.5m and was one of the league’s best attacking players at the beginning of the season.
The former Red Devil was aiming to rejuvenate his career at the Stade Vélodrome since his departure from England. The striker was charged with in 2022 with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault. He was subsequently frozen out at Manchester United and spent the following season on loan at Getafe. All charges have since been discontinued with the player in question denying all allegations.GFFN | George Boxall
