‘I’m only 32’: Memphis Depay not ready to end international career just yet | OneFootball

Memphis Depay wants to win the World Cup. That much was made clear during a recent interview the Brazilian-based forward gave to Ziggo Sport, which has subsequently been reported by VI. Despite his record for the Dutch national team, there has always been some criticism around Depay, either on how he looks or his performances in key matches. Depay led the team in goals during the qualifiers, even if he himself did admit that ‘Of course, you are playing against somewhat smaller countries, but someone has to score them, right?’.

There is also no talk of retirement for Depay at this moment in time. The striker said ‘Many people thought I was done when I moved to Brazil, but I am still just doing my thing for the Oranje. I am only 32’. Depay is likely, if fit, to be the main man once again for the Netherlands at a major tournament. The former Manchester United and Lyon man has three World Cup goals to his name so far, the same amount he scored at Euro tournaments as well.

Yet, this summer, he will likely have support and even competition if he is unable to score goals. Brian Brobbey has impressed at Sunderland this season and certainly earned himself some accolades amongst fans of the Black Cats with his late winner over arch rivals Newcastle United. Donyell Malen has also been in red-hot form after leaving Aston Villa and joining Roma. After seven goals in 29 games this season for Aston Villa, Malen has already scored eight in 13 for Roma. Yet, both have something to prove at the international level, where Depay has, in the qualifiers at least, shown he is the best option for the Dutch national team at this moment in time.

The Netherlands will open their World Cup campaign against Japan, their biggest rivals to top Group F. They then face Sweden and Tunisia.
