Images of alleged Nazi salutes by some Real Madrid fans in the Grada Fan at the Santiago Bernabéu emerged at half-time, prompting backlash amid anti-racism messaging in the stadium.

According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, photos shared on social media appeared to show several supporters beside a banner reading "No al racismo" giving the Nazi salute during the anthem.

The contrast drew criticism online, with users highlighting the inconsistency between the message and the alleged conduct.

Stadium security swiftly located and identified one person, who was expelled from the ground, and disciplinary proceedings have been opened.

The display of Nazi symbols or extremist gestures is banned at football venues and can lead to sanctions for individuals and the organising club, subject to decisions by the competent authorities and disciplinary bodies.

On the pitch, Real Madrid and Benfica were level at 1-1 at the Bernabéu, with the tie provisionally in favour of the side led by Álvaro Arbeloa at 2-1 on aggregate.
