Ruben Amorim is set to enter the 2025/2026 campaign with Andre Onana as his first-choice goalkeeper, despite provoking uncertainty over his future on the final day of last season.

Indeed, the Manchester United boss had fans believing that Onana had already played his last game for the club when he was omitted from the matchday squad for the visit of Aston Villa last month, with Altay Bayindir taking his place between the sticks.

It came after a performance in the Europa League final which left much to be desired from Onana, as has been a running theme throughout his two-season-long Red Devils tenure.

Given the side have since been linked with several shot-stoppers, it was widely anticipated United would look to offload the Cameroonian as soon as a suitor came in.

For example, they had reportedly approached World Cup winner Emiliano Martinez over the prospect of him switching from Villa Park to Old Trafford. One outlet in his native Argentina even went as far as to claim the 32-year-old was ‘waiting’ for United’s call — and it now looks as though one won’t be coming at all.

Onana will remain a Red this summer

Manchester Evening News has revealed this morning that Onana is ‘expected to stay’ in M16 this summer irrespective of his lacklustre showings across the previous two seasons. He enjoys a ‘warm working relationship’ with Amorim, but was originally signed by Erik ten Hag back in 2023 in a £47 million move from Inter Milan.

The former Ajax star is contracted to United until June 2028 and takes home a reported £120,000 per week.

Key decision-makers amongst the hierarchy have prioritised attacking additions in the first stages of the window, having already signed Matheus Cunha and submitted an opening bid for Bryan Mbeumo of Brentford.

Once Amorim’s frontline has been sufficiently bolstered, attention will likely turn to the defence, as both Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans have departed ahead of their terms expiring at the end of the month.
