Givairo Read is one of FC Bayern’s most exciting transfer targets for the coming summer, but instead of continuing to promote himself, the 19-year-old has been sidelined for weeks due to injury – and is causing discussion in the Netherlands
At the beginning of November, everything seemed to be going well for Feyenoord Rotterdam. Robin van Persie’s team were leading the Eredivisie, Read was impressing with strong performances and two assists in a row. At the same time, rumours of a possible transfer to Säbener Straße intensified. Read himself took the speculation with humour. „My teammates were suddenly speaking German to me,“ he said with a grin at the time
Then came the break. In the 2-1 defeat against Go Ahead Eagles, the right-back had to leave the pitch with a muscle injury in his thigh. He subsequently missed eight competitive matches. He made his comeback in mid-January against Heerenveen – straight into the starting eleven. What followed caused unrest
Read almost played through the game before grabbing his damaged thigh again in stoppage time and having to be substituted. The Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad then reported that the medical department had advised coach van Persie to take Read off the pitch after around 60 minutes – but the coach decided against it
Van Persie firmly rejected the accusations. „We make all decisions together,“ explained the former professional and spoke of „factually incorrect“ reports. The fact is that Read has since been ruled out again and is not expected to make a comeback until mid-March at the earliest

Despite the setbacks, FC Bayern’s interest is apparently unbroken. BILD already reported on concrete efforts at the beginning of February. A transfer fee of around 30 million euros is being discussed, Givairo Read
Curious: His absence could even have played into Munich’s hands. In England, Read was heavily linked with Liverpool and Manchester City. The Reds in particular had an acute need at right-back in the winter – several players were out injured. But Read himself was also not fit for action, and a short-term move failed to materialise
It could now come down to a transfer duel between FC Bayern and Manchester City in the summer. Munich are planning for the long term in the right-back position and are monitoring the situation closely. Read would compete with Konrad Laimer and Josip Stanisic and also has the flexibility to help out on the left.
