Jorginho’s understated authority at Flamengo was recognised when he wore the captain’s armband for the first time in the 3-0 win over Botafogo on Saturday (14).
The midfielder rarely seeks the spotlight, yet speaks up when required and is regarded as an internal leader. He is often among the first to arrive and last to leave Ninho do Urubu, and GE reports that he has even been seen working at the training centre on squad rest days.
At 34, he regularly mentors younger team-mates and is viewed within the club as a positive influence across the group.
In more delicate moments, he has also stepped in. During the controversy sparked by Filipe Luís’s public comments about Pedro, it was Jorginho who supported and advised the number nine in his push to bounce back.
His armband on Saturday did not break the hierarchy. Since 2025, Arrascaeta has held the captaincy, shared with Bruno Henrique, Alex Sandro and Léo Pereira following Gerson’s exit. Against Botafogo, Arrascaeta was a substitute and Bruno Henrique was unavailable, and after Leonardo Jardim replaced Léo Pereira, who had been captain, as well as Alex Sandro, Jorginho took the role.
With Jorginho available, Flamengo turn to Remo on Thursday (19) in the seventh round of the Brasileirão at the Maracanã, kicking off at 20:00 Brasília time.
