In the days leading up to the Supercoppa Italiana final, Inter Milan faced growing concerns about their recent goal-scoring struggles, as seen in their 2024/25 performances.
Many feared that this issue could play a part in the derby with AC Milan. Only one individual kept a positive attitude, and it was none other than captain Lautaro Martinez.
In an interview the day before the Supercoppa Italiana finals, Martinez addressed people’s opinions on the club’s lack of goals.
However, he reassured me that it’s not something that concerns him because winning matches is what’s important. Unfortunately, the club was right to worry because they grew complacent and eventually lost to AC Milan.
Captain Martinez was true to his word that he shouldn’t worry about goal droughts in the past few weeks leading up to the finals.
He delivered at Al-Awwal Park, where he scored the game’s first goal near the end of the first half at 45+1’. This put Inter Milan on the offensive, which Mehdi Taremi sealed at 47’.
By most accounts, Inter Milan was the favourite of the match, having won the Supercoppa Italian three times in a row. Unfortunately, the finals are not as simple as virtual football at a Bitcoin casino. According to Martinez, Inter never stopped playing, and Milan never gave up. Their lead was overtaken because their rivals continued fighting hard until the end, leading to the 2-3 score.
Martinez and Taremi’s points were soon challenged when Theo Hernández scored at 52’. Inter played defensively to keep their lead and didn’t relent until Christian Pulisic snuck in a goal at 80’.
It almost pushed to overtime, but Tammy Abraham pulled a miraculous game-changing score of 90+3, ending Inter’s win streak at the Supercoppa Italiana.
After the game, Inter Milan’s captain reflected on where they went wrong. He noticed that the team lost its intensity after securing the 2-0 lead, weakening its lineup in the second half.
This is where AC Milan took the initiative, and he commended its strength in executing a counter-attack that they failed to prevent.
Moreover, Martinez also reflected that Inter Milan was as aggressive as they needed to be. They’ve had plenty of opportunities to score, citing Davide Frattesi, Denzel Dumfries, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s shots among their closest attempts.
It was simply unfortunate that circumstances made them miss those opportunities, leading to their defeat.
Despite captain Martinez’s account of Inter Milan losing their intensity, it is not believed that the club was complacent at all.
Before the finals, both the captain and other members of Inter Milan were stressing about goal drought. Martinez also stated that he was in the toughest spot of his career and was hoping he and Theo Hernandez would return to form for the final.
What happened in the game was just the nature of sports. Opportunities appear before you, and whether you hit or miss is all up to you, like a game in Bitcasino.
To summarise his thoughts, Martinez said that such setbacks are inevitable. All they can do is learn from this, be better moving forward and keep Inter Milan as the top team in Serie A.
