Inter Milan legend Roberto Boninsegna heaped praise on star striker Lautaro Martinez after Sunday’s win over Roma.

Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport via FCinterNews, the former Nerazzurri center-forward backed El Toro to continue to break records.

Despite spending a month on the sidelines with a calf injury, Lautaro Martinez inspired Inter to their first league win since February last weekend.

Indeed, the Argentine center-forward netted a brace on his return to action, leading the San Siro giants to a dominant 5-2 victory.

Furthermore, Lautaro’s brace on Sunday saw him draw level with Boninsegna as Inter’s third all-time top scorer.

Both have scored 173 goals in the Nerazzurri colors, with the 28-year-old primed to climb even higher in Inter’s all-time scoring charts.

Lautaro has now set his sights on leapfrogging the legendary Alessandro Altobelli, who netted 209 goals for the Nerazzurri.

Meanwhile, Boninsegna expects the former Racing Club star to become the club’s second-best scorer.

Asked how he took Lautaro overtaking him in the pecking order, Boninsegna replied: “Very well.”

“An unstoppable process has come to fruition, and it benefits the team. I’m still proud that my ratio of matches played to goals scored remains strong. I have an average of 0.6, just below Meazza’s 0.7.”

“As an Inter fan, I would like our current captain to surpass Altobelli as quickly as possible,” Boninsegna continued.

“Not to upset Spillo, who rightfully sits behind the legendary Meazza, but because it’s clear that the more goals El Toro scores, the more success our team will have.

“The team’s form is intrinsically linked to the Argentine. Our downturn coincided, not coincidentally, with Lautaro’s absence. We couldn’t have a better leader.”

Lautaro could go one better than Bonsinsegna already this weekend when Inter take on Como at Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia.
