The reigning Italian champions produced a fine group stage campaign. This included an impressive away draw against Man City and a home win against Arsenal.

However, Simone Inzaghi’s men still needed one last positive result to secure a direct passage to the Round of 16.

Luckily for Inter, their captain heeded the call, leaving the best for the last matchday.

Following a slow start to the campaign based on his elusive standards, Lautaro has been in scintillating form as late. The 27-year-old consolidated his outstanding run by putting Monaco to the sword.

The Argentine struck thrice against the French principality side to make sure his team finished fourth in the 36-club table.

Hence, Bergomi only had words of praise when discussing the incumbent Nerazzurri skipper.

MILAN, ITALY – JANUARY 29: Lautaro Martinez of FC Internazionale celebrates scoring his team’s third goal to complete his hat-trick during the UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD8 match between FC Internazionale Milano and AS Monaco at Stadio San Siro on January 29, 2025 in Milan, Italy. The 60-year-old points out Lautaro’s body language and overall demeanour on the pitch to highlight his much-improved mentality. He was also happy to see him succeed from the spot-kick once again.

“I’ll start with the penalty, now I don’t remember the last spot kick he took,” said Bergomi during his appearance on Sky Sport Italia via FcInterNews.

“Because against, Juventus, with Calhanoglu missing, it was Zielinski who took them. So for Lautaro to take a penalty, after last year’s miss in the Champions League against Atletico, is already an important step.

“Then this boy’s performance must always be evaluated, because in Prague he scored a beautiful volley. Against Monaco, he scored three, thus equalling Mazzola as Inter’s top goalscorer in the Champions League with 17.

“But he is more than a top goalscorer, Lautaro is a true captain. He has a strong sense of belonging and even when he didn’t score for eight games he had a different facial expression than in the past. This is a sign of strong maturity. Then the goals, with time, always arrive.”

Inter will take on either the winner of the AC Milan vs Feyenoord or PSV Eindhoven vs Juventus in the Round of 16.
