Manchester City could be ready to let go of Ilkay Gundogan just 12 months on from bringing the former Germany international back to the club on a free transfer.
The 33-year-old was brought back to the Etihad Stadium just one year on from leaving the club off the back of a historic Treble success with his Manchester City teammates, in which Gundogan lifted all three trophies as the club’s captain.
Joining FC Barcelona upon the expiry of his contract in 2023, very few could have imagined that just one year later, the exact same free transfer would be completed in the opposite direction and Gundogan would be in Sky Blue once more.
However, while the expectation was that the German midfielder would take on much less responsibility than his previous time at the club, injuries ravaging throughout the side has meant Gundogan has been a mainstay for the most part of the season so far.
And the long and short of the matter is that the player is no longer able to stand up to the speed of the game at the level required by Manchester City, as such leading to a widespread belief that his time with the club may be up in the coming summer.
According to the information of InterLive, should City also manage to not qualify for the UEFA Champions League for next season, Ilkay Gundogan will definitely look to depart the Etihad Stadium with his contract expiring in the summer.
As such, it is claimed that Inter Milan’s CEO Beppe Marotta is ready to move for the former FC Barcelona midfielder and believes that the opportunity would be ‘enticing’ for the Italian giants in the summer market.
There has also been strong conversation in Turkish media about the possibility of Ilkay Gundogan making a switch to Galatasaray, in a move that the player himself has kept the door open to in previous interviews.
Manager of the Turkish giants, Okan Buruk insisted recently that “every team” in the game would welcome Gundogan to their club with open arms, and insisted that he would be an excellent addition to his squad, should it be made possible.
Buruk explained, “Every team wants İlkay Gündoğan. We all know he’s a good Galatasaray player. If he wears our jersey one day, it’d make everyone happy. He continues at Manchester City. It looks like he’ll finish the season there.”
