Inter Milan are planning one of the most extensive squad rebuilds in their recent history, with transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio revealing at least five changes to Cristian Chivu starting lineup expected this summer, and Atalanta midfielder Ederson emerging as a surprise target.
According to Di Marzio on his Caffè di Marzio podcast, Inter recently made enquiries over Ederson.
Although a pre-existing agreement between the player and Atletico Madrid complicated the landscape.
“Inter tried to understand in recent days if it was possible to insert themselves into an agreement between Ederson and Atalanta,” Di Marzio said, via FCInter1908.
“The valuation is very high and the agreement between Atletico and the player makes Inter’s involvement complicated, but it must be noted.”
The broader picture is one of significant transformation.
“Five players will leave Inter,” Di Marzio confirmed.
“It will be a summer of reconstruction and revolution. They will need to find five players and that will require an important budget.”
The spending cannot be concentrated in one or two areas.
Every department will need addressing, with the midfield a particular priority.
“Inter’s idea is to sign two midfielders,” Di Marzio explained.
Aleksandar Stankovic returns from Club Brugge and is one of those two.
Indeed, with a decision still to be made on whether he goes straight into Chivu’s squad or spends a season on loan.
Ederson is described as the temptation for the second midfield slot.
Atletico are pushing hard to finalise their own deal with Atalanta.
However, Di Marzio drew a pointed historical parallel.
“It reminds me of when Atletico completed Lautaro’s medical and then Inter managed to sign him anyway. I don’t know if they will manage it in this situation, but Ederson will leave Atalanta.”
