Inter Milan midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu feels that the Nerazzurri are getting closer and closer to their best after beating Lecce yesterday.

The 30-year-old spoke to InterTV, via FCInterNews, after Inter got their first Serie A win of the season.

Inter did not quite manage to get their Serie A campaign off to the start they’d wanted.

The Nerazzurri’s title defense began away in Genoa last weekend.

Inter had not beaten the Grifone away in Serie A since 2020. And once again, they had to settle for a draw at the Marassi, with the 2-2 scoreline following some late drama in stoppage time.

Therefore, it was all the more important for Inter to respond in their first home match of the season, and their second overall.

Inter hosted Lecce at the San Siro yesterday. It was certainly a match that Inter went into with the expectation of being favourites.

But the Nerazzurri needed to make their superiority on paper count.

And that’s exactly what Inter did. It was a convincing day at the office, with three points and a clean sheet.

“It was an important match,” midfielder Calhanoglu said after yesterday’s match. “The first at home for us.”

“We only had three weeks of preparation, those of us who were with our national teams,” the former AC Milan and Bayer Leverkusen man noted.

“We also had some physical problems,” he added.

“But now, our strength is returning. We’re happy today.”

Calhanoglu declared that “Of course we want to pick up where we left off last season.”

“Playing good football, creating chances.”

“Everyone will want to cause problems for us,” Calhanoglu said. “But we want to continue on this path.”

The Turkish international added of Inter’s next match that “Atalanta are always tough.”

“They always play man-to-man.”

“But there will be time to think about that match and prepare for it,” Calhanoglu said.
