Paris Saint-Germain put Inter Milan to the sword in a one-sided Champions League final to claim an elusive first title at Europe’s top table. The perennial Ligue 1 champinos trounced the Nerazzurri 5-0 at the Allianz Arena in Munich.
Inter stunned Barcelona in an epic semi-final tie to secure their second appearance in the Champions League final in three years. Simone Inzaghi oversaw a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to Manchester City in the Istanbul showpiece in 2023.
With talks over his potential summer switch to Al-Hilal gathering momentum, the 49-year-old headed into the match keen to win the only missing from his trophy cabinet. However, PSG touched down in Munich hellbent on bringing home an elusive first Champions League trophy.
Luis Enrique’s side got off to a flying start, establishing early control of proceedings. After two feeble attempts from Desire Doue and Ousmane Dembele forced Yann Sommer’s comfortable saves, PSG found a breakthrough through former Inter ace Achraf Hakimi.
The Morocco captain tapped the ball into an empty net from point-blank range after Vitinha and Desire Doue made the Nerazzurri backline look silly. Inter barely had any time to recover from the shock when Les Parisiens struck a second punch. This time, Desire Doue was on the scoresheet.
Dembele launched a lightning-fast counter-attack before finding Doue on the far side. The French winger unleashed a half-volley goalwards. His effort took an awkward deflection of Federico Dimarco and tricked Sommer. Just like that, PSG went 2-0 up with only 20 minutes on the clock.
While Inter gained a foothold in the game after Doue’s goal, they couldn’t muster anything noteworthy in the first 45 minutes. Indeed, they finished the half without a shot on target. Marcus Thuram’s towering header on the stroke of halftime was the closest they got to finding the net.
Things went from bad to worse at the start of the second half as Doue completed his brace in his maiden appearance in a European final. The French youngster’s showed composure to finish another lethal counter and make it 3-0. However, it wasn’t the end of Inter’s misery.
Ex-Napoli winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia scored against familiar foes, finishing off with a plomb as another deadly break from Les Parisiens caught Inter’s aging backline off guard. Despite a dominant scoreline, PSG refused to take their feet off the gas, with Senny Mayulu scoring off the bench to make it 5-0.
Yann Sommer – 4/10
Confidence-boosting early saves changed nothing as PSG’s first two goals left him spectating on the line as his defenders let him down.
Alessandro Bastoni – 3/10
It was a disastrous night for the best Serie A defender in 2024/25. Dembele and Doue were always a step ahead, making him look like a second-tier center-back.
Francesco Acerbi – 3/10
Inzaghi’s decision to field the veteran star against one of Europe’s quickest frontlines. PSG forwards were always two gears ahead, making it for a night to forget.
Benjamin Pavard – 6/10
Though he fared reasonably well against Kvaratskhelia, a lack of match fitness forced him off early in the second half. It’s worth noting that he looked much better than Acerbi and Bastoni.
Denzel Dumfries – 4/10
After nearly single-handedly beating Barcelona in the semi-final, the Dutch wingback failed to live up to the billing on the grandest stage.
Nicolo Barella – 5/10
Despite his trademark energy in the engine room, the diminutive midfielder didn’t have much room to showcase his skills. His energy declined as the game progressed.
Hakan Calhanoglu – 4/10
Inter desperately needed their talismanic playmaker, but nothing went his way this evening. He wasn’t on the ball frequent enough, and the Nerazzurri greatly felt his mediocre showing.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan – 3/10
The former Manchester United midfielder couldn’t cope with PSG’s fast pace. Never had any influence in the middle of the park and could’ve come off sooner.
Federico Dimarco – 2/10
If Inter fans decide to point fingers, Dimarco can hardly escape the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. His poor positioning played Doue in for the first, while his sluggish defending cost the Nerazzurri the second. Terrible performance!
Lautaro Martinez – 2/10
Cut off from the rest of the pack, El Toro had no influence on the game in the opening half an hour. A near-anonymous performance from the Argentine star.
Marcus Thuram – 4/10
Tried to impact the play by dropping back to get involved in the build-up, the Frenchman never had a clear sight of goal.
Yann Bisseck – N/A
Nicola Zalewski – 5/10
Kristjan Asllani – 5/10
