Inter claimed a narrow 2-1 win over Serie A newcomers Sassuolo on Fabio Grosso’s return to Stadio Giuseppe Meazza tonight. Fresh off a 2-0 triumph at Ajax, Cristian Chivu’s side halted a two-game losing streak in league action.
Inter needed an early goal to unlock Sassuolo’s low defensive block. Federico Dimarco couldn’t have picked a better moment to get off the mark in 2025/26. He latched onto Petar Sucic’s back pass on the edge of the box and slammed the ball past Edin Muric to fire the Nerazzurri 1-0 up in the 14th minute.
Despite enjoying plenty of possession and keeping Sassuolo relatively quiet in attack, Inter couldn’t find a decisive second goal until the 81st minute. It came from an unlikely source as Carlos Augusto launched a low shot from outside the box. His effort took an awkward deflection, making it impossible for Muric to react.
However, Inter had to survive a late scare to post their second league win of the season. Three minutes after Augusto’s strike, Walid Cheddira scored off the bench, ensuring a nerve-wracking end to the game.
Josep Martinez – 7/10
Largely untested for the best part of his first Serie A appearance since May, the Spanish goalkeeper kept his focus to pull off an acrobatic save and thwart Andrea Pinamonti’s towering header.
Carlos Augusto – 8/10
Despite doing well as a left center-back, the Brazilian’s lapse of concentration almost saw Pinamonti restore parity in the second half. Barring that moment of carelessness, he offered another reassuring performance, scoring a crucial second goal.
Francesco Acerbi – 7/10
It’s impressive to see a 37-year-old performing the way he does. Dominant in the air and clean in his tackling, the veteran defender was outstanding. Composed on the ball as always.
Manuel Akanji – 5/10
The Swiss star is still trying to find his footing in Serie A. However, he shrugged off a sluggish beginning to the match and gradually grew into the game, only to throw it all away by losing sight of Cheddira for Sassuolo’s only goal.
Federico Dimarco – 8/10
Expertly pounced on Sucic’s cutback as he struck the ball past Muric with a clinical finish to score his first goal of the season. In addition to the goal, the Italian’s crosses often caused havoc inside Sassuolo’s penalty area.
Petar Sucic – 6/10
Another assist in another start for the Croatian starlet, who is becoming a key element of the Inter midfield. His passing and movement seemed so effortless as he bossed the middle of the park.
Hakan Calhanoglu –
An early booking may have thrown him off his game, as the Turkish superstar failed to assert his usual influence in midfield. Yet, his diagonal balls and vision provided Inter with moments of quality in possession.
Nicolo Barella – 5/10
Barella’s dip in form continues. He looked a step off the pace compared to his usual standards and made several uncharacteristic mistakes throughout the game.
Denzel Dumfries – 5/10
With Sassuolo unable to maintain sustained spells of possession, the Dutchman spent most of the match deep into the opposition’s territory. However, he couldn’t pick out his teammates inside the box, as his wayward crossing let him down.
Marcus Thuram – 4/10
Following a heroic performance against Ajax, the French megastar delivered his worst performance of the season. Apart from missing a glorious chance midway through the first half, Thuram did nothing noteworthy.
Francesco Pio Esposito – 7/10
Unlike his attacking colleague, the prodigious striker looked lively from the start despite not seeing much of the ball in the box. Muric made a stunning save to deny him his first Inter goal, parrying away his overhead kick.
Lautaro Martinez – 6/10
