Inter have rejected a €25 million bid from Lazio for Davide Frattesi as Nottingham Forest remain in pole position to sign the midfielder.
The race has entered a decisive phase with the window nearing its close.
The Nerazzurri are holding out for a higher figure and are not prepared to lower their demands at this stage of the season.

Forest now appear to be leading the chase.
The Premier League side have maintained strong contact and could move quickly to finalise an agreement.
Their proposal is viewed as more convincing in both structure and long-term intent.
The midfielder, who grew up supporting Lazio, has not yet made a final decision.
However, the report suggests he is leaning toward accepting the English option if the deal is completed.
Inter must balance the opportunity of a major sale with their need for depth in midfield.
With important fixtures ahead, the club will only approve a departure if the financial terms match their expectations.
And, indeed, if a suitable replacement can be secured.
