Alessandro Bastoni is set to miss Inter’s Serie A meeting with Atalanta after failing to shake off a knock suffered in Sunday’s Milan derby, when he was forced off following a foul on Adrien Rabiot.

Sky Sport reports that he has remained in the squad’s training retreat and will be assessed on Friday, with the expectation he will not start and may not even make the bench.

Carlos Augusto is expected to deputise on the left of the back three in his absence.

The situation has a knock-on effect on Cristian Chivu’s other defensive choices. If Francesco Acerbi is passed fit, Chivu would likely move Manuel Akanji to right centre-back, leaving Yann Bisseck on the bench.

Elsewhere there are two further selection battles. In midfield, Petar Sucic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan are vying for a start, while on the right flank Denzel Dumfries faces competition from Luis Henrique.

Although Dumfries is fit again after months out, Chivu may choose to reintegrate him gradually rather than start him in a fixture of this magnitude.
