Flamengo dismissed Filipe Luís in the early hours of Tuesday, only hours after an 8-0 semi-final win over Madureira, a decision that drew international attention.

According to Coluna Do Fla, director José Boto told the coach after his post-match press conference that he would not continue, following a call from president Luiz Eduardo Baptista demanding his dismissal.

Spain’s Diario AS emphasised the timing of the move, while Portugal’s A Bola positioned Leonardo Jardim as the leading candidate to replace him.

In Britain, TalkSport and The Sun focused on the abrupt nature of the exit, including a brief 30-second exchange after the press conference, while Spain’s Cadena SER referenced a Libertadores title six months earlier.

The club later confirmed the dismissal in a statement. Filipe Luís departs after 101 games, with 64 wins, 22 draws and 15 defeats, a 70% return, and seven trophies, among them Copa do Brasil, Supercopa do Brasil, Carioca, Brasileirão, Libertadores, Derby das Américas and Challenger Cup.

Flamengo now turn to the Campeonato Carioca final, facing Fluminense at 18:00 Brasília time on Sunday at the Maracanã.
