Ipswich Town ‘to sign’ £11m keeper as Leeds’ James Trafford wait continues | OneFootball

Fabrizio Romano reports that Ipswich Town have agreed an £11m deal to sign Kjell Scherpen, a goalkeeper on Leeds United’s radar, as the club’s wait for James Trafford goes on.

With Karl Darlow gone and Illan Meslier also leaving, Leeds are down to Lucas Perri and Alex Cairns, the latter viewed as a third-choice emergency option.

Perri struggled after his £15.6m switch from Lyon, though he steadied in the FA Cup. He is a candidate to depart and has agreed personal terms with Torino.

Trafford remains the priority to start, and Leeds appear to be edging towards a club-record deal. The club have explored other names including Zion Suzuki and Vanja Milinkovic-Savic.

Scherpen joined Union Saint-Gilloise last summer and kept 21 clean sheets in 43 matches, conceding 38 times. He might not have displaced Trafford, but could have been considered as the No 2, complicating the search.

As things stand, Leeds are said to be ahead of Newcastle for Trafford, with the player supposedly keen and the club willing to pay £40m. With Nottingham Forest visiting on 22 August, impatience will grow if there is no progress and two goalkeepers are still required.
