Iran, led by head coach Amir Ghalenoei, are out of the World Cup after Austria’s stoppage-time equaliser in a 3-3 draw with Algeria nudged them out of the best third-placed positions. As reported by L'Équipe, the late twist confirmed they will not contest the last 32.

The first phase went to the wire, Iran’s standing among third-placed teams shifting throughout the Algeria–Austria game before the final outcome left them short of qualification.

Teams had to finish among the eight best third-placed sides to progress. Iran ended up ninth, two goals behind Senegal, the only team to reach the knockout phase with three points.

They depart unbeaten after three draws, matching Cape Verde, who took second in Group B. That still was not enough for Mehdi Taremi’s side in Group G.

After difficulties with hosting conditions in the United States, where they were permitted to play but not reside, the squad watched the denouement from Mexico.
