The USA begin their home World Cup against Paraguay and will have high hopes of replicating their successful stint as hosts in 1994, when they reached the last 16.

A favourable draw in Group D will give them even more scope for optimism, as Mauricio Pochettino’s side face Paraguay - who have qualified for the World Cup for the first time since 2010 - as well as Australia and potential dark horses Turkey.

But Paraguay have more recent pedigree in the tournament, reaching the quarter-finals for the first time on their last appearance, when they lost to eventual winners Spain in South Africa, while the US most recently reached the last eight in 2002.

The game will be preceded by one of three opening ceremonies, with each of the three host countries providing its own star-studded affair. The likes of Katy Perry, Future, LISA and Tyla will all perform, with the ceremony beginning 90 minutes before kick-off in Los Angeles.

Chris Richards is the main concern for Pochettino, with the Crystal Palace defender having only recently returned to training following an ankle injury. Christian Pulisic and Folarin Balogun are expected to headline the attack. Paraguay’s Julio Enciso picked up a quad issue in a 4-0 friendly win over Nicaragua but is expected to recover in time to feature.
