Michelle Agyemang was named young player of the tournament at Euro 2025

England head coach Sarina Wiegman could offer no definite update on the condition of Michelle Agyemang after the teenager was stretchered off in the second half of the friendly against Australia.

But she told a press conference after the game: “I’m not very positive about what I have seen.”

She had earlier said to broadcasters ITV: “I haven’t been inside yet [to consult with staff] but of course that looked horrible. When you’re stretchered off, that’s not nice anyway, but that doesn’t look good. It’s not confirmed, but that looks bad.”

Agyemang went down with what seemed to be a serious knee injury around 15 minutes from the end of the match.

She had come on as a substitute just after the hour mark, with England already leading 2-0.

Agyemang – an Arsenal player currently on loan to fellow Women’s Super League side Brighton and Hove Albion – rose to prominence over the summer when she shone as an impact substitute in England’s victorious Euros 2025 campaign.

She scored in the quarter-final against Sweden and the semi-final against Italy, and was named young player of the tournament for her impressive displays.

Sarina Wiegman: We wanted to dominate the game

Apart from the evening being soured by the injury to Agyemang, Wiegman had plenty of positive things to say about her team’s display as they bounced back from a 2-1 defeat to Brazil at the weekend.

However, she admitted that there needed to be some tweaks to the gameplan after Alanna Kennedy was sent off in the first half for bringing down Alessia Russo – the second game in succession where England’s opponents were reduced to ten players early on.

“We wanted to dominate the game and early in the game a player was sent off for them so they got to ten,” Wiegman said to ITV. “We had a lesson the other day, how to do it against ten.

“We wanted to keep up the pace of the game, create chances, and of course wanted to harm them.

“I think we were OK on the ball but can do better especially in the final third, be tighter on the ball, be aligned a little more, make better decisions. Then we could have scored a little bit more.

“Overall of course we were solid even when we didn’t have the ball.”
