England head coach Sarina Wiegman was very pleased with her side’s performance in their 6-0 UEFA Women’s Nations League victory over Portugal at Wembley on Friday evening.

The reigning European champions were relentless as they put six goals past the visitors without reply. Aggie Beever-Jones grabbed the headlines by netting a first-half hat-trick.

When speaking to the media after the match, England boss Wiegman praised her side’s adaptability in their performance.

“I think it was a very good performance,” Wiegman said. “What we wanted to do tonight is press very early and high, win the ball back as soon as possible and then play as good as possible, create chances and score goals.

“I think we did that really well in the first half and also, when they [Portugal] changed their shape, we adapted really well. We stayed connected and kept the energy in the game too. I thought that was really good to see.”

Chelsea forward Beever-Jones became only the second Lioness to score a hat-trick at Wembley. She netted her treble within the first 33 minutes of the game. Wiegman was pleased with the youngster’s calmness when playing on the big stage.

She said “I think of course, she’s a goalscorer, she scores goals very easy. I think she was really good, she played really relaxed.”

Georgia Stanway, Lauren Hemp and Alex Greenwood all returned to the field following long-term injuries and Wiegman highlighted the hard work that the trio have put in to regain fitness ahead of this summer’s UEFA Women’s EURO.

She said “It’s really nice to see them back. They’ve worked so hard to get where they are right now and that’s what they showed.

“If you haven’t put all of the work in to this point then you cannot have a performance like what they showed tonight. I’m really happy with that and of course, we need to keep building; the EUROs are really coming close and at the same time, we want to perform in the Nations League, so we are trying to find that balance.”

All eyes now turn to England’s final UEFA Women’s Nations League fixture against Spain where victory would see the Lionesses win their group. Wiegman says that the team want to be successful on all fronts this summer.

She said “This game tonight was really important because we knew that if we won, we were secured for the second spot and that means that we are in a good position for the World Cup draw which is really important too.

“You go [to Spain] on Tuesday and you want to win that game because you want to win the Nations League too. At the same time, we’re preparing for the EUROs.”

England’s final UEFA Women’s Nations League fixture against Spain kicks-off at 6pm on Tuesday evening.
