Thursday’s reports claim that there is increasing optimism regarding the potential appointment of Paolo Maldini to the role of technical director with the Italy national team set-up among the FIGC, but the Milan legend has not yet come to a definitive decision.
Newly-elected FIGC President Giovanni Malago held his first meeting of the federal council on Wednesday and among the most pressing orders of business is the appointment of a new technical director and head coach of the Italy national team.
There have been suggestions that Malago wishes to appoint a new technical director before making a final decision on the head coach, with Antonio Conte and Roberto Mancini the current frontrunners to return as CT. Maldini is the clear first-choice to take over as technical director.
Malago has recently claimed that these decisions will be settled ‘within a week’.
Now, according to updates on Thursday, the signs coming from the Maldini camp are increasingly positive as hours go by. While the former Milan captain and director remains undecided, TMW claims that ‘optimism is on the rise’.

Maldini is expecting to hear back from Maldini with a definitive answer within the next few days.
If Maldini decides against accepting the Italy technical director role, the FIGC may decide to bring in two individuals instead, one to act as President of Club Italia, and another to act in more of a sporting director role.
