According to Football Italia, Bologna and Fiorentina’s quarter-final defeats have left Italy fifth in UEFA’s coefficient table, making an extra 2026-27 Champions League place practically impossible for Serie A.

Bologna lost 3-1 at home to Aston Villa in the Europa League last eight. Fiorentina were beaten 3-0 away at Crystal Palace in the Conference League quarter-finals.

Serie A clubs have struggled in Europe’s flagship competition this season, with Napoli exiting in the league phase. Inter and Juventus then went out in the knockout play-off.

England have already secured an additional Champions League berth for next season.

Spain are viewed as favourites for the second, and final, extra place, sitting second in the standings with six teams still involved across Europe.
