Manchester City’s Jack Grealish has been excluded from Thomas Tuchel’s first squad as England Head Coach, first revealed ahead of Friday’s announcement.
The German tactician has taken over from Gareth Southgate after England fell just short of UEFA European Championship glory last summer when they suffered a narrow defeat in the final to Spain.
The former Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea manager was scheduled to face the media and take questions on his squad selection on Friday morning before his first round of matches as the new Three Lions boss.
According to The Athletic in the lead up to the official announcement, Jack Grealish was revealed to be absent from Thomas Tuchel’s first England squad after a disappointing season for the £100 million forward at Manchester City.
The former Aston Villa captain has again struggled for fitness and game time in his fourth season at the Etihad Stadium, with many expecting the 29-year-old to leave the club in the summer.
Marcus Rashford, on the other hand, has impressed since his January loan move to Aston Villa from Manchester United and as a result of recent performances, secured himself a first England call-up since March 2024.
Arsenal’s Myles Lewis-Skelly, who scored against Manchester City in a 5-1 win at the Emirates Stadium in January, has also received his first senior international call after a stellar breakthrough season under Mikel Arteta.
Grealish has been left frustrated with a lack of minutes this season, though Guardiola could point to a lack of fitness and severe dip in form since the 2022/23 treble season to explain his preference of Savinho, Jeremy Doku and even Matheus Nunes in wide roles.
Manchester City could decide to sell Jack Grealish this summer ahead of a major squad revamp that is likely to witness a string of first-team names depart and new signings recruited to get the Premier League champions challenging on all fronts next term.
The winger did not come on as City chased an equaliser against Nottingham Forest in the Premier League last weekend, with time running out for Grealish to prove his value to Guardiola, who is losing patience with his most expensive signing of his career.
